A Beginner’s Guide to Project-Based Learning for Homeschoolers is here to

  • help make your child’s learning
  • more meaningful
  • spark your child’s excitement
  • make it easier to connect and retain information

This hands-on guide shows you how to make homeschooling interactive, child-centered, and relevant to real-life topics.

I'm Shari. I’m a homeschooling mom of three with over 20 years in education and a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology. I used project based learning with all three of my kids for over 16 years.

I teach you a simple step-by-step process for setting up projects based on your child’s interests, how to come up with creative project ideas that are within that sweet spot of challenging but doable, and practical tools for helping your child complete a project.

This guide is designed to help your kids

  • build independence,
  • problem solve,
  • get creative, and
  • enjoy learning.

Project Based Learning (PBL) shows your child how to connect learning to the real world. When done well, it gives kids a sense of purpose because they explore topics that matter to them.

Imagine your kid diving into a project about ecosystems, building a model, creating an infographic or a slideshow, and presenting their ideas to you. It may take longer than filling out a worksheet, but your child will be exploring their interest in science in ways that are both fun and practical… and they will learn and retain far more than if they simply write short answers and move on.

Project based learning helps kids connect to learning beyond just checking boxes. Project-Based Learning (PBL) engages kids in exploring real-world problems and challenges and promotes active and engaged learning. Research indicates that PBL promotes independent learning, builds confidence, and enhances motivation among children. It helps them build skills that stick. It works with any curriculum, and any age or stage. It can make learning fun and meaningful for your child and help them take ownership of their learning.

🌍 Why Project-Based Learning Works

Relevant and Engaging Learning: Each project connects to real-life topics that make learning purposeful. From studying ecosystems, building models, or creating a simple business plan, kids get to understand “why” they’re learning, making each lesson feel meaningful.

Building Problem-Solving Skills and Confidence: Projects encourage kids to explore, experiment, and come up with their own solutions. This hands-on approach makes learning active and engaging, giving them confidence and practical skills they can carry into any area of life.

A Natural Way to Connect with Your Kids: PBL gives you opportunities to explore topics together, creating shared experiences that make homeschooling more enjoyable for both of you. You’re guiding, not directing, allowing your child to take ownership and feel proud of their accomplishments.

A Bit About Me

I’m a homeschooling mom of three with over 20 years in education and a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology. When I started homeschooling, I saw my own kids become more engaged when we moved away from traditional worksheets and embraced hands-on, project-based learning.

I used real-world projects for every subject throughout the 16 years I homeschooled my kids. It helped them become confident, curious, and independent learners. And it inspired me to share my approach to using project based learning in homeschooling and teach other parents through my simple, common sense system.

Teaching my kids through real-world projects was also my motivation for creating Quest Schooling as a place where homeschool parents can find tools, encouragement, and practical ideas for making learning more meaningful.
